Gifted and Talented Program
Gifted and Talented at Highland

Like any field, the field of gifted and talented is always growing and changing with new discoveries and insights into the identification and education of gifted children.† Highland School District currently provides academic programming to meet the needs of gifted students at the Elementary, Middle, and High Schools.† These programs are embedded in curriculum and instruction during the school day, as well as in extra-curricular activities that are offered during lunch, and before school.

What is Gifted and Talented?
"Gifted and talented children" mean those persons between the ages of five and twenty- one whose abilities, talents, and potential for accomplishment are so exceptional or developmentally advanced that they require special provisions to meet their educational programming needs.

Gifted students are capable of high performance, exceptional production, or exceptional learning behavior by virtue of any or a combination of these areas of giftedness:
  • General or Specific Cognitive Ability
  • Specific Academic Aptitude (Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, and World Language)
  • Specific Talent Aptitude (Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Musical Abilities, Dance, Psychomotor Abilities, Creative or Productive Thinking, Leadership)

You can find out how students are entered into the Gifted and Talented Program, as well as ways to nominate students by accessing our Highland Gifted Parent Handbook
